Malcolm Stuart is an artist living and working in Oakland, California. His work is rooted in drawing and painting and is frequently incorporated into fashion and objects for daily use. He studied painting and drawing at SVA, but it was an airbrush apprenticeship at a mall in Jamaica Queens NYC that brought his vision into focus. With the airbrush at his command, he painted fabric, clothing and furniture, and became hooked on the thrill of having his art incorporated into people’s daily lives.
Soon he began collaborating with fashion brands, other artists and designers, museums, galleries, and companies to make designs for apparel, performance, print, and exhibitions. His work is playful—bold in its use of shape and color, and often utilizes the graphic expressiveness of cartoon. He enjoys the presence of a story, but in the form of loose and playful suggestions that are ambiguous, open to interpretation and the imagination of the viewer. His aim is to create vibrant images that are humorous, playful, odd, and curious, in as many ways and places as possible.
Malcolm is also a master hula hooper and make-up artist.
